Maison Les Vorgiers
Between the canal and the apple orchards of Saillon, the Maison Les Vorgiers emerges with subtlety — at once discreet and assertive in the surrounding agricultural landscape. Designed to minimise its footprint, it draws on the traditional farm dwellings that favoured building upwards to preserve cultivable land. This approach allows the project to combine verticality with generous interior spaces while establishing a close dialogue with its natural environment.
The house rises over three levels, offering a slender, refined silhouette crowned by a thin roof that stands out in the village landscape. Each space was meticulously considered to create a harmonious and warm living experience. Its bevelled corners, punctuated by gentle curves at varying heights, soften its silhouette and pay tribute to the traditional buildings of Saillon. These architectural details subtly evoke the local architecture while affirming the contemporary character of the house.
The mineral façades, clad in a lime-based render pigmented in sandy tones, echo the marble quarries of Saillon. Tiny flecks of mica set into the render catch the light, recalling the sparkle of snow in the sun. Fragments of fine rock add a soft, vibrant texture, offering an enriching tactile experience up close. This mineral materiality is complemented by a vegetal structure of a timber trellis hosting climbing plants, creating a visual and ecological link with the surrounding garden.
Inside, the lime-rendered surfaces are left raw, without pigments or additives, hand-polished to a smooth yet textured finish. This interior materiality harmonises with the oak joinery that gives rhythm to the spaces and reinforces the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Each opening was carefully placed to offer precise framings of the Valais landscape and the neighbouring buildings. The windows thus become true living paintings, establishing a constant link between the domestic world and the outside environment.
Every step through the house invites contemplation of the surrounding nature. Each threshold crossed offers a new perspective, magnifying the simple moments of everyday life through a subtle dialogue between architecture and territory. The Maison Les Vorgiers celebrates the simplicity of life by transforming the ordinary into an intimate and poetic experience, rooted in the natural and architectural heritage of Saillon.
